  • In order for the implant to heal into the bone, it needs rest. For one month, do not bite down on the side where the implant was placed. Do not test the firmness of the implant with your tongue or any other objects.
  • You can eat and drink as early as few hours after the surgery when the wound stopped bleeding.
  • For the first 3 days, avoid using a toothbrush, interdental brushes and dental floss on the implant and the area around it. Other teeth should be cleaned as thoroughly as possible. From the third day on, you can carefully wash the implant and the area around the implant using soft brush and rinse your mouth with “chlorhexidine” (Corsodyl, Curasept) mouthwash twice a day.
  • If the implant was placed close to the nasal cavity, you should not blow your nose nor sneeze for the first 14 days – we will bring this to your attention.
  • For the first 3 days, while resting or sleeping, put a bigger pillow under your head so that the head is positioned higher than the rest of the body and does not become congested. Do not lie on the side of your body on which the implant was inserted.
  • Sensitivity after the insertion is usually tolerable and it is compared to sensitivity sensed after a tooth extraction. Pain relief medications should be taken no more than 4 times a day and only in case the sensitivity is disturbing. Should you experience major sensitivity, do not hesitate to contact us.
  • Usually, only a mild swelling occurs and it lasts for first 3 days. Avoid eating hot meals and drinks (soups, coffee, tea etc.), alcohol and performing increased physical activity (any sports, heavy physical work). Apply cold compress on the area; however, only to the extend it is tolerable and comfortable and the area is not numb.
  • Do not smoke; eventually cut down on smoking to a minimum. Smoking demonstrably reduces the success rate of implant healing.
  • In case of wound hemorrhage after the implant insertion, bite on a clear gauze for 20 minutes or repeat the procedure. If the bleeding does not stop within 1 hour, please, contact us or the dental emergency. The presence of pink saliva is normal; however, you should not spew out blood or blood clots.
  • Currently, the success rate of implants is up to 98%. To ensure that your implant serves you for the rest of your life, it is essential to follow the principles for oral hygiene care given by a dental hygienist. You should not smoke!
