The phrase “tooth extraction” sends chills down the spine of many people. Simply put, it is the extraction of a tooth and therefore its removal from the dental alveolus. It is one of the more common outpatient procedures that is performed using local anaesthesia.
Extraction is the last resort in many cases of tooth damage. It is necessary when a tooth is so damaged by caries that it is not possible to treat it, for example, with a filling or a replacement crown. Tooth extraction is also performed if the tooth has suffered extensive inflammation in the root area and root canal treatment (endodontics) can no longer be performed. If the root canal treatment has been successful but the inflammation persists and the patient is in pain, the dentist may decide to extract the tooth based on the patient’s condition. A tooth may be extracted even if an orthopaedic surgeon has determined that there is not enough space in the dental arch. Probably the most common cause of tooth extraction is wisdom teeth which, due to their position, disrupt the surrounding tissues and cause uncomfortable pain. However, you don’t have to be afraid of tooth extraction here at Dental Centrum NIVY! We use local anaesthesia to ensure that you do not experience any pain during the entire procedure.
If there was extensive inflammation in the tooth, the healing time may be prolonged. However, in normal cases, the healing time after an extraction wound is approximately 4-6 weeks. During this process, the gums are the first to start healing, followed by the bone. Even if the painful tooth has been removed, the area may still be sensitive and sore after the extraction. It is important to prepare for swelling and discomfort after the anaesthesia wears off.
As for diet, the patient should prepare to eat softer and mushier dishes that are not too hot and certainly not spicy. During the first 24 hours the patient should also avoid the consumption of dairy products and smoking. The wound is initially very sensitive to all external influences.
Thinking about dental hygiene is important even after tooth extraction! The exception is the actual area of extraction, where care must be taken. Do not scrub it or try to clean it. After extraction, it is necessary for a blood clot to form at the location to prevent any further bleeding. By cleaning, you could delay the process of the blood clot forming. So the first 24 hours after tooth extraction are crucial! The next day, you can carefully start rinsing your mouth with a special alcohol-free disinfectant mouthwash.
In rare cases, after a tooth extraction the patient may be forced to visit the dentist again. If your pain persists or the wound does not stop bleeding after a few days, do not hesitate to call us and we will give you an appointment right away!
After thorough healing, patients often ask what the next step is for the empty space left after the tooth has been extracted? If the tooth was extracted from an area that is visible it can be a long-term problem not just from an aesthetic point of view. You can prevent this by consulting with our experts who will recommend the right type of dental replacement for you. If you are missing just one tooth, a dental implant is the most suitable and natural tooth replacement. We will do our best to make you smile with joy again!
