In many cases, we encounter caries from early childhood. It is very uncomfortable and painful for a patient. But how does caries occur and what can we do to prevent it?
In many cases, we encounter caries from early childhood. It is very uncomfortable and painful for a patient. But how does caries occur and what can we do to prevent it?
It is caused by bacteria build-up in our mouths that attack the hard tissues of the tooth. It’s not a disease one is born with. It is mainly caused by improper oral hygiene. Bacteria that you don’t remove from the surface of your teeth by brushing them regularly form a textured substance also called plaque. It sticks firmly to the tooth and its subsequent removal is not easy. mproper tooth brushing and neglect of plaque removal causes demineralization and therefore decalcification. It is through demineralization that a chalky white stain forms and the tooth enamel becomes brittle. But nothing is yet lost at this stage. If you manage to keep the tooth clean, without letting more bacteria form, the decay can be stopped and the enamel can remineralize.
However, if the bacteria start to spread more rapidly, the decay will continue deeper into the dentine and will subsequently change its colour to have brown or even slightly black spots. It’s important to remember that even a tiny cavity in your tooth can cause big problems!
Many people when they find out that they have caries start to panic about visiting a specialist. In many cases, they let the pain evolve to such a stage that a visit to a dental emergency service is necessary. However, nowadays, treating caries no longer has to be an ordeal! We will painlessly drill it out and replace it with a suitable filling. Don’t underestimate the treatment of caries and seek out a specialist the moment you start experiencing the first symptoms. It may happen that untreated caries invades the dental pulp, so thorough treatment of the root canals will also be necessary.
Caries is caused by a build-up of bacteria, which then forms plaque on the teeth. That’s why it’s important to brush your teeth thoroughly, especially in the evening!
